DAY 2

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014October 11, 2017

CLEAN – Main Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a place you feel comfortable in, making it easier for you to fall asleep and have the desire for a little ‘romance’.  Mine got to the point that I was dumping ‘stuff’ on my bedside table and dressing table.  I would wake and the first thing I saw was the clutter, I felt overwhelmed and disappointment with myself on how I let the house go.  I didn’t enjoy waking up each day and seeing clutter, it’s not the right mindset for a good start to a day.  Make your room a priority, to create a calm and  tidy place so tomorrow you will have a better attitude when waking up.

Cleaning task

Today’s cleaning task is to do the following in your bedroom:

[wlchecklist name=’Day2CleanKitchen’]

  • Clean mirrors using a microfibre cloth and vinegar

Please don’t do the following tasks today, they are coming soon:

  • The bathroom
  • Your wardrobe

Here are a few additional posts that will help you:

  • Bedroom makeover – from cluttered to a relaxing bedroom for Mum
  • How to clean windows
  • How to clean fans
  • How often should you change your bed sheets?
  • Killing dust mites in non-washable items

DECLUTTER – Bedroom surfaces

Do you have one too many ‘pretty things, nic nacs or ornaments’ on your bedroom surfaces. Having too many little things will make the task of cleaning harder and you more than likely won’t be dusting over your surfaces as often as you should.  Today’s task is to look over what you have and re-evaluate if they need to be there.

ORGANISE – Top drawer of your bedside table

My bedside table doesn’t have much in it these days, years ago I would have magazines or a pile of kids drawings, now it’s a drawer of my items I use every night.  My 2nd drawer is where I keep my treasures, cards and love letters from hubby, trinkets and memories of my grandparents and school years.

Use a drawer organiser set to keep all items from rolling around the drawer.  I keep my drawer very minimal. In my top drawer I keep moisturiser for my hands, a photo of my Nan, candles, notepad and pen for those moments you get a great idea, nail file, chapstick and medication.

NEW HABIT – Make your bed each morning

After I wake up I leave the sheets down to air out the bed, have a shower, open my blinds and window, make bed, then get dressed.  I find by making my bed it helps to keep the room looking tidy which stops me from dropping things on the bedroom floor or end of the bed.

The one habit I do each morning without fail is…. make my bed.  I am a big advocate for making the bed each day. Not only will it make your room look nice and tidy, but you will feel a sense of accomplishment and organisation before your day has even begun.  It’s unbelievable how such a simple 2-minute task can put you in a positive mindset for the rest of the day. I’ve put together a list of reasons why making the bed is worth your time and energy!

If you struggle to find the motivation to make your bed, then please read this post, a tidy 2-minute daily habit I do each morning, sharing the benefits of making your bed.

There’s something about having cushions on the bed that makes it look cozy and inviting and through the day tidy.

5 MINUTES ONLY – Wipe over your dining chairs

Question relating to your sheet washing schedule:
Do you do all of the sheets on all of the beds in your house every week on the same day? Surely that would be a mammoth task? Or do you have the sheets on a rotation system?
Currently i do bed linen every Saturday, and I alternate week about with my childs bed.
So week 1 i do my bed linen, week 2 i do my childs bed linen, and then repeat, so that sheets on each bed get changed fortnightly.
I am wondering if this is often enough?

Great question Darra. Most weeks I do do them all, only becuase my husband and the twins all have skin allergies they need them washed weekly. In the cooler months when their allergies aren’t so bad I may do a week of ours and then the next week theirs. I’ll ask this question on the organised housewife facebook page and see what the rest of the community have to say.

This challenge day hasn’t happened for me yet. Between a computer crisis and a school homework crisis, it simply didn’t happen today.
Guess i will catch up on this day on the weekend.
Actually my main bedroom with probably be the biggest job in the whole house, as my bedroom is where stuff from every other room gets dumped in order to disappear it from sight. Might aim to put all the random paperwork in a few storage boxes and try sorting in front of the tv at night…

Darra if you can’t get to your bedroom now make the rule from this day forward that nothing apart from your own belongings belong in your bedroom, the family can find a home for their stuff. You need your room to be clutter free to help you wake up in happier spirits.

OMG, had the best sleep in months (surprising since I have a 23 m/old and a breastfed 9 m/old who still feeds in the night). It was like the kids could even feel how lovely my room (and freshly rotated mattress) felt.
Super embarrassed by the amount of dirt and dust I found under our bed though – I mean, how does it even get there, the bed goes all the way to the floor!

That is so wonderful to hear Katie, hope it continues for you!! I think it’s the wind pushes the dust and dirt under beds, furniture etc, I find so much cat hair under mine as the cat likes to hide there.

I have been reading your blogs for a while now and it is something I’ve been doing because of you… making my bed every morning has changed how I behave in our bedroom… I no longer throw anything on the floor, I hang anything that is to be worn again and throw dirty clothes straight into the hamper… it certainly has changed my mood and feelings towards not only my bedroom but the whole house!
Thank you Kat!

I’m lucky as I did thoroughly spruce out the bedroom a couple of weeks ago. It was a very hot day so I washed our winter doona and all the underlays and pillow protectors. The bedding gets all washed every Saturday. Also decluttered the bedroom in January and have kept it that way. I found I wasn’t coping with all the housework end of last year so now a lovely lady comes and dusts once a fortnight. This has made me tidier and the house is much easier to manage. I have some tasks to catch up with later in the week as I have been working so far this week but the check lists make it easier. Hubby is going away for a week which will make life easier also. Not looking forward to some of the decluttering tasks though. Good motivation thanks.

That’s great that you are a few steps ahead Lesley. Why are you not looking forward to the decluttering, do you have a lot to go through, you don’t want to part with items? Housework can get very tedious love that you realised you needed help and found some I am sure that will make a big difference for you x

Got home soaked due to heavy downpour. Might leave the bed stuff for the weekend. I’m doing a load of clothes already so they will take up the clothes horse tonight
But I have put some stuff that belong in bed/bathroom in my bedroom from living areas waiting to be sorted – so on to those and the other crap oops stuff laying around my room

Slowly, slowly getting there. Have cleaned my bedroom windows as best as I can. Our bedroom has a sliding door, and some bright spark decided it was best to put the screen door on the INside. I’m having trouble getting it clean – there’s dirt and possibly mildew between the screen and the (decorative) frame. What’s the best way to clean it without destroying my carpet?

Reply
Kat - The Organised Housewife March 4, 2015 - 9:45 am

are you able to remove the screen alison, pick it up out of it’s tracks and take it outside and give it a good scrub and hose down?

Can’t wait to go to bed tonight and for hubby to come and see how clean and tidy our room is. It makes a lot of difference to your attitude knowing that you are making positive changes in your home.

I make my bed everyday since i was 10 and I am 35 now hahaha…its a habit from small imposed by our father and I so glad I had followed it. Making the bed everyday is a MUST in my home. It makes my overall mood better.

Bedsheets are stripped and washed every week or sometimes 2x a week as both my husband and daughter has allallergic rhinitis.
