Day 10

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014September 26, 2017

Clean – Oven

I’m sure I’m hearing moans all over at the moment.  Today’s task is to clean the oven and I agree with you it would be one of my least favourite jobs too.  But I love to bake and doing it in a clean oven is preferable.

Cleaning task

Below is a very simple, non toxic way of cleaning the oven:

  • To remove the baked on food at the bottom of your oven sprinkle with bicarb soda.  Fill a spray bottle with vinegar, then spray this over the bicarb, allow to sit for 30-60 minutes.  Then it should be easy to remove, if not, repeat the process.
  • To clean the shelves, place a few old towels or sheets in your bathtub (enough to prevent scratches) then put in your shelves and sprinkle napisan over top.  Napisan is a powder that helps to remove stains from clothes, but I find works wonders in the oven.  Fill bath with HOT water enough to cover the shelves.  Leave for a few hours or overnight. Gently scrub grime, this should easily come off.

I find using this scourer is easier on my fingers

Declutter – Kitchen Cupboards

While you are waiting for the vinegar and bicarb to do it’s thing with the oven, declutter and organise at least 2 kitchen cupboards.  Look through the cupboard and realistically assess each item, have you used it in the past 12 months, do you really need it, is it taking up space that could be used for a better purpose?

Organise – Tupperware cupboard

My tupperware cupboard does get unorganised at times, with many times throwing in a container, quickly closing the cupboard and then hope it won’t fall out when you open it up, ooh it drives me batty.

Below are 5 steps to have beautifully organised kitchen cupboards:

  1. Remove all items from cupboard.
  2. Wipe shelves down with a damp sponge.
  3. Declutter – While organising the cupboard take the opportunity to declutter, thow away cracked or chipped crockery and items that you never use, pass them on to charity.
  4. Organising – When organising your cupboards use the: SOMETIMES, RARELY, DAILY approach.  Items that are used daily need to be easily accessible at the front of the cupboards or within arms reach. Keep the rarely and sometimes items on higher or lower shelves.
  5. Take a step back and admire your work!  Great job!

Take a peek inside some of my kitchen cupboards here.

Below are photos of my tupperware cupboard from my old house.  I’ve left them on here to show you various ways to organise the tupperware cupboard.I use a little plastic drawer organiser to keep items such as small lids, icypole tubes and reusable lunchbags (these can be found at discounts shops and bunnings).

For extra storage I use the IKEA Ratinell Variera at the back of the cupboard, so I can store lunch containers underneath and extra items on top.

I store all my lids in this system that I brought from Big W.  It has 2 slide out shelves.  In the bottom I store all smaller lids, with the larger on top.  It’s neat and compact which provides ease when searching for lids.

I love these baskets (purchased years ago from The Reject Shop) they are great for keeping items tidy. Can you tell I like to bake.

New Habit – Cleaning stove

After cooking on the stove let it cool down slightly then give it a wipe over, it’s much easier to remove spills from the stove while it’s still warm.  I use my reusable wipes to clean over the stove.

Fingerprints, toothpaste splatter and steaks on a dirty mirror can be very irritating, but I have a very quick solution to help you have a beautifully clean mirror.

Done!
Major work was the oven cleaning today as most cupboards were decluttered and organised last week.
Just left with one more cupboard to organise.

Double Oven all shiny & clean ! Enjoyed decluttering and organising 1 cupboard & 3 drawers. I have way too much clutter. This will be work in progress as the other 2 cupboards are just as scary. Good to finally get rid of lots of unnecessary items.
