Day 9

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014September 13, 2018

Clean – Ceiling fans

Cleaning task

Dust very easily accumulates on the fans.  Being they are on the ceiling we don’t notice. However, to prevent skin allergies and hay-fever it’s necessary to clean the build up off the blades. Find a complete list here on how to clean your ceiling fans.

Declutter – Junk Drawer

Aah the junk drawer most households have a junk drawer or a draw that can never be kept tidy. I don’t have a junk drawer, however my kitchen utensil drawer is the drawer that never seems to stay tidy.  Today’s task is to find the drawer that needs the most help, declutter and organise it so it not so much of a struggle to find things next time you visit it.  Find more details here about organising the kitchen drawers.

I also organised my sister in laws kitchen drawers read more here.

and here is my utensil drawer in our current home, this is before, visit the blog for the beautifully organised after.  The drawer dividers are available in my shop HERE.

Organise – Calendar/Diary

I know at the beginning of the year we buy a new diary and plan on using it, however life gets busy and the diary is put into a drawer to never be used.  Sound familiar?   Let’s get your diary out, be it either a:

  • Diary
  • Wall calendar
  • Calendar on your phone
  • Calendar on your computer

I use the calendar on my computer/phone together with my daily planner.

Today I would like you to spend time putting all of the following into your diary so are organised for future holidays, events or birthdays. Add the following items:

[wlchecklist name=’OrganiseDay9Calendar’]

New Habit – Unload dishwasher

As I mentioned yesterday, my kids unload the dishwasher, they usually do this after breakfast. Today’s task is to create the new habit of unloading the dishwasher, either getting the kids to do it each morning so you or the rest of the family can then load in the dirty dishes during the day or finding the time to do it while the kettle is boiling or your waiting for the toaster to pop.

[wlchecklist name=’NewHabitDay9′]

5 Minutes Only – Dust around the lights

Dust around the lights in each room of the house.

I haven’t quite finished cleaning task. We don’t have ceiling fans but have a heat pump that needs regular dusting & also the extractor fan hood over the stove top needs a good clean. Have had a few interruptions this week with school activities so hoping to finish tasks this coming week 🙂

How do you incorporate your phone and a paper system for your calendar? Does it make you double up? I’ve always liked the idea of a planner but I use my phone calendar too much and can’t keep the two going?

I LOVE YOUR DIARY! I Still use an A4 daily paper diary boring black and white. Are you doing one for next year? Can you buy them already or do you have to order. I like ones with the day and date.
Thanks!

I’ve actually had a great time going through the reject shops and discount stores locally looking for drawer organisers and boxes etc. I bought a drawer organiser in a zig zag formation which when put together creates a multitude of little storage areas ie the sock drawer works well with this. Another one I used small boxes to divide up the contents of the drawer – loving the clear boxes so that the eye is not distracted by the boxes but can see what you’re looking for. Also there is a drawer organiser which is 2 dividers which can be extended to the size of the drawer so that all the long things can have their place. I never thought that sort of shopping would be fun!
loving it!

Hi Kat,
with todays cleaning task, what does one do when they dont have fans? We have a/c units though
Im so excited, the junk drawer task (i chose drawer under coffee table) I did a little leap of joy upon reading. I pretty much tossed 80% of the stuff out and the rest i sorted and put away. Ive made that drawer spare sock drawer until i get around to sorting it.

love it Lana that you find joy in cleaning your junk drawer, this makes me feel so happy LOL. Ooh yes you could give you air conditioner a clean, I don’t have a blog post to direct you to, this has prompted me I need to create one, funny thing is I cleaned my filter only yesterday. Open up the vent and you will see there is a filter in there that collects dust, use a vacuum to remove it.

Hi Kat & Lana,
I’m in week 2 of my challenge, so just came across this comment thread and wanted to offer some professional advice re air con filters (I own & operate an air con biz);
Don’t vacuum or brush a/c filters, as this can damage them and eventually result in a need to replace them. If properly cared for, reverse cycle ducted &/or split filters should last the lifetime of the system.
Best way to clean is with cold running water (simply use indoor tap or outdoor hose for larger return air type filters). air dry in shade, NOT in direct sun. Put back in place, and that’s it! Recommend doing this a minimum of 4 times a year, but more often if you can remember.

Hope this helps! 🙂

I have a side board with 4 drawers, I’ve tidied 3 of them so far really well so I’m feeling pretty good about the “junk” drawer situation. I even tackled the desk drawer this week and the kitchen drawer with the odds and ends in it.
yay x

I am doing so well, have managed to tackle troubled, cluttered areas already, and ploughing through it all, thank you, Kat, I didn’t think it would ever get done. Now it is being done in order, so it is not overwhelming!

I needed this easier day to catch up. Had cleaned my only ceiling fan in my bedroom the other day. My utensil drawer is also my nuisance untidy drawer and so did that and my calendar always has to be super organised so could check that all off. I did order though the organised housewife calendar for next year. Can’t wait to take a look at it!

I’m so excited about the calendar, I signed off on the final proof yesterday, it’s now gone to print, so much better than I imagined!!
