Day 8

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014September 26, 2017

Clean- Kids toy room, craft room, spare room or extra living room

One of the above rooms only, you can come back after the challenge if you have more than one of the above rooms.

Today’s task is a bit of a mix as I realise all our homes are different, some have a toy room for the kids, you may be lucky enough to have a space dedicated to your hobby, a spare room or extra second lounge room. I’d like you to clean at least one of these rooms.

Cleaning task

If your cleaning a spare bedroom, use this cleaning list.

If your cleaning a second living area, use this cleaning list.

For other rooms such as hobby or play room use this general cleaning list:

I love to have a little craft space, this one in our old house was shared with my husbands man cave.  You can read more about my craft room makeover here.

{The Organised Housewife} Craft Room a

I sadly don’t have a room dedicated to crafts in my new house, but I do have it all tidy and organised in some cupboards.

I use labels throughout my entire house, you can find them in my bathroom, kitchen, garage, laundry and even in my fridge… wherever you look really. Labels give instant organised gratification.

Declutter – Kids Toys

Kids toys can easily get out of control with too many given to them at Christmas or on birthdays and then their collection outgrows the storage you have for them all.  A really great solution for this is to create a toy rotation system.  This works by going through and removing a selection of toys and storing them away (in the tops of wardrobes or backs of cupboards) for 2-3 months.  At the end of this period bring the toys back out to replace the contents of the box with the toys they have been playing with the past few months.  It’s like Christmas again for the kids, finding new enjoyment out of old toys.  This system is great especially if you have lots of bulky toys.  Spend some time today to go through and declutter your kid’s toy collection.

{The-Organised-Housewife}-Toy-Room-Organisation---makeover-9

I helped a read sort through her toy room, you will find loads of great storage ideas in this post, an amazing toyroom makeover.

{The-Organised-Housewife}-Toy-Room-Organisation---makeover-1

This is my kids old toyroom, the only storage in it this ikea expedit unit.  I group like toy items together in the baskets, eg playdough equipment in one, train set in another, tea party sets and more.

While you are sorting take note of what they don’t have, what they need and what they want and add to your gift list in your Christmas Planner.

Organise – Family Responsibility System

{The Organised Housewife} Kids helping around the home

My kids have been helping around the house since they were young, picking up toys from the floor, tidying the bookshelf or helping me dust. I remember when they first asked to unpack the dishwasher I didn’t think they were capable, but they were and they were so pleased to be helping.  By getting the kids to help around the home is teaching them responsibility and life lessons that dishes or clothes need to be cleaned daily or that floors don’t clean themselves. I don’t call them chores as I feel as a family these tasks need to be completed and together we can do it.  I do the dishes, but kids unpack the dishwasher, I fold the washing, the kids put it away.

You’ll find a list here of age appropriate tasks the kids can help you with.

Also read why we give our kids pocket money.

I have split my kids tasks using my tasks to do chart, I used to put this on the back of the pantry door at my old place.

[wlchecklist name=’OrganiseDay8′]

New Habit – Tidy shelf

Once every 2-3 nights before I give the kids a kiss goodnight I spend 2-3 minutes straightening up a shelf or area of their room, such as books, teddies, clothes or a drawer. I find doing this helps keep their room tidy.

[wlchecklist name=’NewHabitDay8′]

5 Minutes Only – Clean surfaces in bedroom

Hows your main bedroom looking after the wonderful clean up you gave it last week? Today’s task is to spend 5 minutes straightening it up or wiping over surfaces so you can maintain a tidy bedroom.

Urgghhhh… This is a mammoth task for me! I have a really tiny study aka my Monica cupboard!! Am really pleased with the progress I’ve made so far and have ticked all the jobs off the list but I’ve got lots of paperwork to wade through ? Time for a large cup of coffee!! Will be amazing when it’s done though… I usually just chuck everything in there!! ??

Looking forward to tackling the playroom today. I have a ottoman full of miscellaneous toys, everything is going to come out and have a new home or be put away for toy rotation.

Great idea, Charlene. Ottoman’s are great for storing toys in. I found when my kids were a lot younger rotating toys was like Christmas all over again.:)

I’ll need a couple of extra days for this one lol! Thankfully i have already done our guest bedroom and bathroom. But still need to do the sewing room, rumpus/playroom ( the one i will do on this day) and guest room walk in robe/store room. I love my big house but it sure has gotten in a mess! Hopefully after this challenge it will be easier to keep under control!

Hi Kat, in the picture of your craft room/office/man cave there is a unit next to the window six open shelves and 6 with doors, would you please share where you got the unit. My Mum’s about to take back the cadenza I’ve been using and I want something to replace it. I thought that would be great, it would also allow me to have some nice things in the office and freshen it up a bit. Thanks …

These are from Ikea, the BESTA system: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/search/?query=BEST%C3%85 I love them you can mix and match to whatever configuration you want for your space.

Hi Kat,
Received the special pressie in the post today. Thankyou so much, it was greatly appreciated as I felt a bit flat today.
Was also wondering if you had any tips or suggestions on decluttering and organising my craft room. I am a scrapbooker/ card maker.
No matter how hard I try I just can’t seem to keep it tidy. It still looks cluttered.
Thanks.
Renee

Hi Renee, How wonderful! So glad you received your surprise and it has encouraged you to keep going!
With organising and decluttering your craft room, i like to keep all of my craft items in a cupboard with i purchased from Ikea. I use craft storage boxes also from Ikea and i like to use clean containers so i can easily see what is inside. These clear containers are from Fiskars. Here is there website for you: http://www.craftonline.com.au/shopping/c-brands-fiskars.asp

I don’t have a craft room/toy room/or spare room so I gave our Craft & Games cupboard a quick tidy, sorted daughters barbie collection – she needs to make a decision as to what she wants to keep and what she wants to donate.

I have incorporated jobs into my daughters Morning and Evening routines…I am loving the new habits that we have learned so far in the challenge. They are working and keep me focused 🙂

Have made my bed every morning before I leave the room – makes a huge difference 🙂 It’s made me keep the room tidy throughout the day. Just need to give it a quick dust 🙂

🙂

Hi Kat!
Just trying to decide what room I will do for this day. We have an open plan area that incorporates our lounge, dining room and study. For the Lounge day I just did the lounge area. Will there be seperate days to do the dining area and the study? Or should I do one of these now? (If there are seperate days for the dining room and the study then I thought I would use this day as a bit of a catch up day as there are some tasks I still need to tackle!!
Thanks! Bel :o)

Hi Belinda, Yes there are separate days for the dining and office rooms, so you can use day 8 as a catch up day.:)
