Clean – Oven
I’m sure I’m hearing moans all over at the moment. Today’s task is to clean the oven and I agree with you it would be one of my least favourite jobs too. But I love to bake and doing it in a clean oven is preferable.
Cleaning task
Below is a very simple, non toxic way of cleaning the oven:
- To remove the baked on food at the bottom of your oven sprinkle with bicarb soda. Fill a spray bottle with vinegar, then spray this over the bicarb, allow to sit for 30-60 minutes. Then it should be easy to remove, if not, repeat the process.
- To clean the shelves, place a few old towels or sheets in your bathtub (enough to prevent scratches) then put in your shelves and sprinkle napisan over top. Napisan is a powder that helps to remove stains from clothes, but I find works wonders in the oven. Fill bath with HOT water enough to cover the shelves. Leave for a few hours or overnight. Gently scrub grime, this should easily come off.
I find using this scourer is easier on my fingers

Declutter – Kitchen Cupboards
While you are waiting for the vinegar and bicarb to do it’s thing with the oven, declutter and organise at least 2 kitchen cupboards. Look through the cupboard and realistically assess each item, have you used it in the past 12 months, do you really need it, is it taking up space that could be used for a better purpose?

Organise – Tupperware cupboard
My tupperware cupboard does get unorganised at times, with many times throwing in a container, quickly closing the cupboard and then hope it won’t fall out when you open it up, ooh it drives me batty.
Below are 5 steps to have beautifully organised kitchen cupboards:
- Remove all items from cupboard.
- Wipe shelves down with a damp sponge.
- Declutter – While organising the cupboard take the opportunity to declutter, thow away cracked or chipped crockery and items that you never use, pass them on to charity.
- Organising – When organising your cupboards use the: SOMETIMES, RARELY, DAILY approach. Items that are used daily need to be easily accessible at the front of the cupboards or within arms reach. Keep the rarely and sometimes items on higher or lower shelves.
- Take a step back and admire your work! Great job!
Take a peek inside some of my kitchen cupboards here.

Below are photos of my tupperware cupboard from my old house. I’ve left them on here to show you various ways to organise the tupperware cupboard.I use a little plastic drawer organiser to keep items such as small lids, icypole tubes and reusable lunchbags (these can be found at discounts shops and bunnings).
I use a little plastic drawer organiser to keep items such as small lids, icypole tubes and reusable lunchbags (these can be found at discounts shops and bunnings).

For extra storage I use the IKEA Ratinell Variera at the back of the cupboard, so I can store lunch containers underneath and extra items on top.

I store all my lids in this system that I brought from Big W. It has 2 slide out shelves. In the bottom I store all smaller lids, with the larger on top. It’s neat and compact which provides ease when searching for lids.

I love these baskets (purchased years ago from The Reject Shop) they are great for keeping items tidy. Can you tell I like to bake.

New Habit – Cleaning stove
After cooking on the stove let it cool down slightly then give it a wipe over, it’s much easier to remove spills from the stove while it’s still warm. I use my reusable wipes to clean over the stove.

Omg what a day it’s no wonder I haven’t cleaned my oven in years it a hard job took lots of scrubbing but looks fantastic think next time it won’t be as hard as l plan to stay on top of it l need a coffe now I’m stuffed ?
A well-deserved coffee it sounds like! 🙂
Hi Kat,
do we always have access to these pages if we log back in after the challenge finishes?
Kristen.
Absolutely, you have lifetime access. When the new round starts you have access to the complete program, it’s just when you start you get it all gradually 🙂
I didn’t have Nappisan so I used the pink bottle umm, I think it’s called “Vanish” and it worked very well and the gumption on the oven window was brilliant
turns out Vanish is a form of Nappisan
The oven took a while but the shelves came up a treat so now I can look into my oven and boy! it’s impressive. The stove took a long time but has also come up a treat. It’s old so only 2 of the 4 hotplates allowed me to take the underneath out to clean properly. Goes to show that if it had been cleaned regularly earlier it might be easier to clean now. I had already seen your idea of putting your baking trays in a box, I did that a couple of years ago(great idea). My Tupperware drawer is not so easy to fix: we’ve just bought some pyrex dishes to be able to move food from the saucepan to the fridge to the oven and then put the dish in the dishwasher with ease. The problem is to now sort out the Tupperware to give the pyrex somewhere to live. Also the kids have grown up and moved out so the “lunch boxes” are no longer the big deal they once were. But basically, I loved today’s tasks!
I love those pyrex dishes, especially as they can go into the freezer, then the oven. Do you have some space in your pantry to store them?
I’m working on that. I’m the sort of person who makes a decision about something but has to live with it a little while in case I didn’t foresee the consequences so I have a box of tupperware in the pantry but I’m not sure if it will stay there yet or get thinned out. I hate throwing perfectly good things away, thank goodness for op shops
I have dreaded cleaning my oven as I just hate the toxic smell of the oven cleaner. The napisan was
Brilliant!!! With some elbow grease it has come up a treat!!! The glass is still quite marked but will try
The gumption as per your previous suggestion.
Would you also use gumption on some of the baked on marks on the ceramic grill tray???
I will seriously never use commercial oven cleaner again!!!!
Napisan is brilliant isn’t it Michelle! Yes I would use gumption on the tray it should help remove any baked on grease.
HI Kat, i’m not following this in complete order but think I am making some headway at home. Could you tell me have we received any printable to go in the “Routines” tab? That’s the part I’m looking forward to. cheers. f
Hi Francine, this is where you would place your morning and evening routine, then after you finish the challenge together with the habits you will be able to tweak it.
Managed to catch up today. Loving the oven, it was honestly the easiest and most effective oven clean I have ever done. Still have some kitchen cupboards to reorganise but did complete two drawers and two cupboards. Was able to get rid of a lot of dated plastic cups (when the kids weren;t looking!). Family now used to my big daily challenge show off at the end of the day.
I’m on a roll 🙂 Kat, do you have any suggestions for cleaning the inside glass of the oven door?
You are totally on a roll Ness, well done!! I use gumption on my oven door if it’s got quite a lot of drips and spills.
Great! Never thought of that – thanks 🙂
Well, I did fall behind a bit this week but today I have pretty much caught up on what was left. Still a couple of the 5min tasks to check off but I think I have done well! And now I have empty space in some of my kitchen cupboards!!
Great work Rebecca on finding time to catch up and wowsers, space in cupboards love it!!
I bake a lot and I love sorting and reorganising my cake tin drawers
