Day 10

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014September 26, 2017

Clean – Oven

I’m sure I’m hearing moans all over at the moment.  Today’s task is to clean the oven and I agree with you it would be one of my least favourite jobs too.  But I love to bake and doing it in a clean oven is preferable.

Cleaning task

Below is a very simple, non toxic way of cleaning the oven:

  • To remove the baked on food at the bottom of your oven sprinkle with bicarb soda.  Fill a spray bottle with vinegar, then spray this over the bicarb, allow to sit for 30-60 minutes.  Then it should be easy to remove, if not, repeat the process.
  • To clean the shelves, place a few old towels or sheets in your bathtub (enough to prevent scratches) then put in your shelves and sprinkle napisan over top.  Napisan is a powder that helps to remove stains from clothes, but I find works wonders in the oven.  Fill bath with HOT water enough to cover the shelves.  Leave for a few hours or overnight. Gently scrub grime, this should easily come off.

I find using this scourer is easier on my fingers

Declutter – Kitchen Cupboards

While you are waiting for the vinegar and bicarb to do it’s thing with the oven, declutter and organise at least 2 kitchen cupboards.  Look through the cupboard and realistically assess each item, have you used it in the past 12 months, do you really need it, is it taking up space that could be used for a better purpose?

[wlchecklist name=’DeclutterDay10′]

Organise – Tupperware cupboard

My tupperware cupboard does get unorganised at times, with many times throwing in a container, quickly closing the cupboard and then hope it won’t fall out when you open it up, ooh it drives me batty.

Below are 5 steps to have beautifully organised kitchen cupboards:

  1. Remove all items from cupboard.
  2. Wipe shelves down with a damp sponge.
  3. Declutter – While organising the cupboard take the opportunity to declutter, thow away cracked or chipped crockery and items that you never use, pass them on to charity.
  4. Organising – When organising your cupboards use the: SOMETIMES, RARELY, DAILY approach.  Items that are used daily need to be easily accessible at the front of the cupboards or within arms reach. Keep the rarely and sometimes items on higher or lower shelves.
  5. Take a step back and admire your work!  Great job!

Take a peek inside some of my kitchen cupboards here.

Below are photos of my tupperware cupboard from my old house.  I’ve left them on here to show you various ways to organise the tupperware cupboard.I use a little plastic drawer organiser to keep items such as small lids, icypole tubes and reusable lunchbags (these can be found at discounts shops and bunnings).

For extra storage I use the IKEA Ratinell Variera at the back of the cupboard, so I can store lunch containers underneath and extra items on top.

I store all my lids in this system that I brought from Big W.  It has 2 slide out shelves.  In the bottom I store all smaller lids, with the larger on top.  It’s neat and compact which provides ease when searching for lids.

I love these baskets (purchased years ago from The Reject Shop) they are great for keeping items tidy. Can you tell I like to bake.

New Habit – Cleaning stove

After cooking on the stove let it cool down slightly then give it a wipe over, it’s much easier to remove spills from the stove while it’s still warm.  I use my reusable wipes to clean over the stove.

Fingerprints, toothpaste splatter and steaks on a dirty mirror can be very irritating, but I have a very quick solution to help you have a beautifully clean mirror.

Oven – DONE! 🙂 Never thought I would say (type) that! So happy with my clean oven (I never want to use it again!) Check out the before/after pic on my blog – http://teacherbytrade-motherbynature.blogspot.co.nz/2014/10/20-day-challenge-day-10-cleaning-oven.html

Cupboards & Tupperware containers are also DONE (I had a massive cull last month – makes things so much more easier to clean and keep organised) so today I just gave them a tidy up 🙂

have a great weekend Ladies 😉

2 kitchen cupboards done, the corner cupboard has been on my to do list for 3 months. Recycle bin & charity box both added to & I can see into it & how much better it will work. Yay! Why did I wait so long? Really needed the challenge to push me. Tupperware cupboard underway while oven is soaking so to speak. Mirror cloth in bathroom waiting for next time I am in there later. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me the motivation I so desperately needed.

Hi Kat/Kate – I know that Kat is logging off over the weekend. I was just wondering if there is any possibility of opening the tasks on Friday afternoon, so that I can plan my week ahead over the weekend.

I understand if this isn’t possible but thought I would ask. I think I asked this on FB page, but I couldn’t see a response. I apologise in advance if you have already answered this query.

Hope that everyone has a lovely weekend.

Kind regards,

Anna

Hi Anna, sorry I can’t change the date of it opening, when I set up the program I have set each new week to open on Sunday ready for Monday, this gives me a day to work with it if it failed to open (like last week). 🙂

Hi Kat, I have been putting off cleaning my oven because it was just too hard. Now you have inspired and energised me, so this is the first thing I did today. I have also started to look at how I can organised my benches to have that less cluttered look. Still thinking about that. I have too many items ie toaster etc on my benches, leaving me less room to work on. I completed 1 shelf in my pantry and will work on the others today. Thanks for the inspirations! 🙂

Hi Susanne, Fantastic! So glad to hear you are enjoying the challenge and achieving great results! If you have a spare shelf in your pantry maybe you could try putting your toaster in there leaving your kitchen benches less cluttered. Keep up the awesome work.:)

Hi Kat,
Have you got a masterlist, that tells us everything in order fro day 1 to 20?
I’d really love a list to print up with all the rooms I need to clean that I can tick off as I’ve completed them. Maybe this will be in next weeks tasks.

Hi Nicki, No sorry all the checklists are on the daily tasks sheet for you to tick off once completed.

Hi. I know this is a little off topic, but I wondered if we might receive the email to unlock next week’s tasks on the Sunday? I’m sure I’m not alone is wanting to organise my week so that I can get the most out of the tasks. Depending on my workload and kids’ after-school activities, I sometimes mix up the tasks and change the days I do things. Knowing in advance what we have in store would help a lot. Would it be possible? Thanks!

Hi Deirdre, Absolutely it should be open Sunday afternoon.:) Allowing you to plan your week.

Thank you Kate. I too appreciate having access for next weeks challenge on Sunday. The challenge has come at the most frantic few weeks I have had all year but I am loving the determination & purpose it brings. All those jobs I thought would take so long are not nearly as onerous as I thought & being able to tick them off, go back to what may have been missed later, knowing it won’t be forgotten as I have a list is so helpful. Support of everyone has been the best inspiration. Thank you girls!

I use Nutrimetics Heviclean for my oven and other cleaning tasks, including scrubbing the kids dirty sneakers or even as a pre-wash stain remover. It’s all natural, derived from plants so has no harsh chemicals in it.
They also sell a laundry liquid and OLC- Organic Lotion Concentrate that’s great for cleaning with, washing fruit & vegies and I even use it in our Dettol touch-free hand wash system.

Are other stain soaker powders the same as Napisan? I have a Sard one, would that do the trick or is there a specific ingredient to look out for?
Thanks

Hi Carla, Yes absolutely it should do the exact same job, it’s just a different brand. I have used both and both are great.

Can you recommend a good cleaner/process for cleaning glass cooktop? I clean any food off the stove but there always appears to be marks that don’t come off so easily.

Reply
Kate - Kat's Assistant October 16, 2014 - 10:02 am

Hi Andrea, I would suggest try having the cooktop warm and sprinkle bicarb then add vinegar and let it sit for a while then give it a good scrub using a non scratch cleaning cloth, If that doesn’t work try using Gumption.

Reply
Nicki Wright October 17, 2014 - 9:46 am

I also bought a cook-top scraper to use on mine. It gets off the baked on grime, as well as the burnt pasta water that overflows every time I cook! I’m a single mum, so I shower the kids while dinner is cooking. This means we have almost daily overflowing pasta pots etc on the stove-top. The scraper works a treat and doesn’t scratch the cook-top.
