CLEAN – Kitchen
Our kitchen is the central place of our home. Visible by everybody that visits and we can see it while we eat dinner and sitting in the lounge room. For this reason I like it to be tidy through the day and at the end of the night, to make it easier to relax. Plus having a tidy kitchen makes cooking and baking much more enjoyable.
Cleaning task
I don’t want you to clean the cornices, floor, stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer or pantry today, we will get to them soon, instead today’s task is a good kitchen clean:
[wlchecklist name=’Day1CleanKitchen’]
Tip: Cleaning stainless steel appliances: spray appliance with vinegar and wipe over with a soft cloth. To remove fingerprints and give it a shine use some olive or baby oil on a cloth along the direction of the stainless steel grain.

Here are a few posts I have shared previously about the kitchen:
DECLUTTER – Kitchen Bench
Remove everything from the kitchen bench that does not need to be there:
- Paper clutter – consider making a specific home for all your papers
- Rubbish – should be thrown in the bin straight away
- Appliances
- One too many canisters
[wlchecklist name=’Day1Declutterkitchenbench’]
My kitchen is very open plan, all visitors to the house see it. I don’t keep too much on my bench except for the appliances that I use nearly every day such as the kettle and Thermomix.

I got these canisters from the Reject Shop, whilst they are the perfect colour for my kitchen, they aren’t completely airtight.
ORGANISE – Under the kitchen sink
You want to make this cupboard organised enough that everything has a place, to avoid it from becoming a mess and you only have supplies in there that you use, to avoid it becoming too cluttered.
- Remove everything from the cupboard and reassess what you have
- Throw away anything you no longer need
- Organise your products appropriately amongst the kitchen and laundry
[wlchecklist name=’Day1Organiseunderthekitchensink’]
Key for me to keeping this cupboard tidy is exactly what I outlined above. Only keeping the cleaning products I use for the kitchen under the sink and giving everything a place.
These drawers are from Bunnings. In the top drawer, I keep my tea towels. Previously I stored them on the other side of the kitchen. I’ve moved my stash to directly under the sink so we don’t drip water onto the floor. In the lower drawers, I have dishwasher tablets and spare sponges.
This tension rod holds my cleaners helping to keep the cupboard clutter free. I got this rod a few years ago from Daiso. Tension rods are extremely hard to find. Bunnings don’t sell them. Spotlight do, however their smallest is 80cm.
I placed 3M hooks on the cupboard door to hold our gloves. I have 2 pairs one for my small hands and one for my hubby (our water is sooo hot here, which is good and bad, we need gloves so we don’t burn our fingers).
I have recently changed from my glass jar of reusable wipes to this plastic tub, only because I wanted more wipes on hand as I found I was using up the 6 wipes that would fit in the jar far too quickly.
- Microfibre clothes were $10 for a pack of 20 from Bunnings
- Container for wipes, Decor from Spotlight $14.99
- Stackable Drawers $19.98 each from Bunnings
- Tension rod from Daiso
- Sink Tidy Caddy $19.99 Spotlight
- Long white Slide n Stack plastic basket $16.95 from Howards Storage World
- Smaller white plastic basket from local dollar store
- 3M hooks, local supermarket or Bunnings
- Gold Bulldog clips from Kikki K, but can also be purchased from Officeworks
I also want to show you my old house’s under sink cupboard. I kept my bulky appliances on the lower shelf and kitchen cleaning products on the top shelf. To keep everything grouped together I used plastic baskets found cheap from the dollar stores or Big W.
I kept my toaster under the sink, purely as I had nowhere else to store it. I kept it in a plastic storage basket to catch all the crumbs, makes it easier to keep the shelf clean. My homemade antibacterial wipes are great to have on hand for quick clean ups.
NEW HABIT – Clear the kitchen bench
To help you stay in control of you home I will share a new habit for you each day to add into your daily routine.
Clear your benches and clean the dishes before relaxing for the evening.
These are the steps I take each evening when cleaning the kitchen:
- Clear dining table
- Pack dishwasher
- Wash all pots and pans, cutting boards and any other items that don’t go in the dishwasher
- Clear away clutter on the kitchen bench
- Wipe over the bench, picking up all crumbs and cleaning up spills
- Empty sink, wipe over sink
- Turn on dishwasher
- Leave clean dishes to drip dry and put away in the morning
By following these steps above not only helps me to relax in the evening, but I also wake in a better mood with a clean and tidy kitchen.

5 MINUTES ONLY – Tidy a bookshelf
These 5 minute only tasks are little snippet tasks that you can do while on the phone or have a few spare minutes while waiting for the pot to boil on the stove. If you can’t complete them that’s fine, at the end of the challenge I will provide you with a full list of al the 5 minute tasks, so you can work through them all at your own pace.

I’m a bit behind as I’ve had a hard time with my kids these holidays. But finally finished day 1 today
Holidays are always like that with little ones, hope next week is a little calmer for you. Well done, Day 1 is a great step, hope you enjoy waking up tomorrow to your tidy kitchen 🙂
I have made a start. Was ready for it, did all the pre tasks then hubby now off on long term sick and 4 yr old twins not coping well with the change of circumstances. But today I have started!!! Kitchen looking better already, although like others its going to take longer than 20 days to get my house done. Finding it hard to stick to day 1 tasks, had a look at other days in week and found those an easier proposition!
Ooh Lisa sorry to hear about your hubby, are you using Essential Oils too to help him through it? Lavendar (or lavender peace) may help the twins calm them down a little with the change. doesn’t matter how long it takes you I’ll be here to help you each step of the way x
The one smell he absolutely hates is Lavender. My very small plant is banished to the bottom of the garden! Any tips on how to deal with grumpy hubbys who isn’t 100% on board with this??
Been using camomile or a Sweet dream mix to keep them calm
Feeling I can accomplish anything after starting on day 1 today. With a tornado of a nonsleeping toddler and part time work I’ve resigned to the fact that I may take a little longer than most. But I’m super motivated and even put on my ‘Getting Stuff Done’ diffuser to tackle my never been deep cleaned in 7 years kitchen. Woo!
Love it!!!! What is in your getting stuff done diffuser??
Would love to know your ‘Getting Stuff Done’ blend too please
My Mum was a hoarder so when she died 18mths agoI got everything! This included my
this included my lovely old Dad. He came along with his own hoarded goodies. I recently got
sick of asking my children and extended family to ‘Come and get anything that appealed to
them. Well, nothing happened. So when I stumbled on ’20 Days’ I knew that my patience
would be rewarded. I’m on a mission now. Yay! 1 thing that I found when my 2 kids were
younger was that a simple basket for toothpaste etc was a boon and I used a similar basket
in the other areas, Kit. and Laundry was great too. I also found that using plastic cutlery
trays were an easy fix for my knitting needles etc and paintin and drawing supplies too.
Thanks Kat for my re-boot to sanity, Cheers Janey.
Thank you Jane. I am so pleased the challenge can be of help and help you and your family clear out what is not needed.
You also have great tips of items you already use for storage and supplies!! ?
I didn’t notice how cluttered my kitchen was until I did day 1. Now my benches are clear and look great.
Fantastic! How are they going after a few days Renee, are you able to still keep them clutter free 🙂
Well, I’m earning the Red Lantern for a late start, but it is a start so that’s a good thing. Loaded the dishwasher, cleaned the other dishes which wouldn’t fit in it, turned on the dishwasher and began with wiping down the cupboards. Was pondering what clearing the benches meant when I heard an awful, shrieking sound emanating from the dishwasher. So I tried, numerous times, to fix what I could. Not working so well thus far, so I’m reading up on quieter dishwashers. I put on NCIS as my friendly background noise while I tackled other issues … then the cable fritzed with the message that indicates our unit is dying, just in time for kids to arrive home without TV for the weekend. I’m thinking a lot of reading may get done … Thought I’d worked out the dishwasher issue until a burning smell came from the kitchen and this time it wasn’t my cooking! So now, truthfully, things are looking a bit worse than when the day started, but briefly I did have a clearer counter — and realized that’s what you meant by benches! So I’m learning new lingo, sort of pulling my hair out, and still so thankful to be on our way to a more orderly house — even if we have to do the dishes by hand for a while!
Ooh no LL what an ordeal for you, is your dishwasher completely broken? I love that you can see the positive in it all though, more reading and that you can see that you will have an orderly home soon x
LOL about the “one too many cannisters” – it’s like you have a seeing eye in my kitchen Kat. My kitchen counter needs removal of “one too many (or 3 too many) scented candles!” 🙂
LOL, how did you go with removing them from your counter Lyndall? 🙂
Yay! Did it – on day 3 – But I did it!!!
You did it Kelly, well done!!!
Hi a question regarding the gloves, I was having a hard time trying to figure out a location for the gloves .. under the sink, on the door sounds great.. so do you dry it and put it under the sink?
Yes I just put them over the sink and when I walk past in the next half hour or so I hang them up 🙂
I’ve started! I did most of the Day 1 tasks yesterday minus the high stuff like dusting the light fitting and wiping the top of cupboards…might get hubby to do it. Decluttering the kitchen bench space and having it free of stuff is liberating! Now to get hubby to stop dumping stuff there…or finding him somewhere else to dump his keys/water bottle/doctor’s letter ?. I have a 7 month old and a 3 year old so it may take me longer than 20 days!
that is the perfect thinking Meline, do you have a place in mind for the dumping area, can you get a basket and make this the dedicated space for keys etc?
