CLEAN – Kitchen
Our kitchen is the central place of our home. Visible by everybody that visits and we can see it while we eat dinner and sitting in the lounge room. For this reason I like it to be tidy through the day and at the end of the night, to make it easier to relax. Plus having a tidy kitchen makes cooking and baking much more enjoyable.
Cleaning task
I don’t want you to clean the cornices, floor, stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer or pantry today, we will get to them soon, instead today’s task is a good kitchen clean:
[wlchecklist name=’Day1CleanKitchen’]
Tip: Cleaning stainless steel appliances: spray appliance with vinegar and wipe over with a soft cloth. To remove fingerprints and give it a shine use some olive or baby oil on a cloth along the direction of the stainless steel grain.

Here are a few posts I have shared previously about the kitchen:
DECLUTTER – Kitchen Bench
Remove everything from the kitchen bench that does not need to be there:
- Paper clutter – consider making a specific home for all your papers
- Rubbish – should be thrown in the bin straight away
- Appliances
- One too many canisters
[wlchecklist name=’Day1Declutterkitchenbench’]
My kitchen is very open plan, all visitors to the house see it. I don’t keep too much on my bench except for the appliances that I use nearly every day such as the kettle and Thermomix.

I got these canisters from the Reject Shop, whilst they are the perfect colour for my kitchen, they aren’t completely airtight.
ORGANISE – Under the kitchen sink
You want to make this cupboard organised enough that everything has a place, to avoid it from becoming a mess and you only have supplies in there that you use, to avoid it becoming too cluttered.
- Remove everything from the cupboard and reassess what you have
- Throw away anything you no longer need
- Organise your products appropriately amongst the kitchen and laundry
[wlchecklist name=’Day1Organiseunderthekitchensink’]
Key for me to keeping this cupboard tidy is exactly what I outlined above. Only keeping the cleaning products I use for the kitchen under the sink and giving everything a place.
These drawers are from Bunnings. In the top drawer, I keep my tea towels. Previously I stored them on the other side of the kitchen. I’ve moved my stash to directly under the sink so we don’t drip water onto the floor. In the lower drawers, I have dishwasher tablets and spare sponges.
This tension rod holds my cleaners helping to keep the cupboard clutter free. I got this rod a few years ago from Daiso. Tension rods are extremely hard to find. Bunnings don’t sell them. Spotlight do, however their smallest is 80cm.
I placed 3M hooks on the cupboard door to hold our gloves. I have 2 pairs one for my small hands and one for my hubby (our water is sooo hot here, which is good and bad, we need gloves so we don’t burn our fingers).
I have recently changed from my glass jar of reusable wipes to this plastic tub, only because I wanted more wipes on hand as I found I was using up the 6 wipes that would fit in the jar far too quickly.
- Microfibre clothes were $10 for a pack of 20 from Bunnings
- Container for wipes, Decor from Spotlight $14.99
- Stackable Drawers $19.98 each from Bunnings
- Tension rod from Daiso
- Sink Tidy Caddy $19.99 Spotlight
- Long white Slide n Stack plastic basket $16.95 from Howards Storage World
- Smaller white plastic basket from local dollar store
- 3M hooks, local supermarket or Bunnings
- Gold Bulldog clips from Kikki K, but can also be purchased from Officeworks
I also want to show you my old house’s under sink cupboard. I kept my bulky appliances on the lower shelf and kitchen cleaning products on the top shelf. To keep everything grouped together I used plastic baskets found cheap from the dollar stores or Big W.
I kept my toaster under the sink, purely as I had nowhere else to store it. I kept it in a plastic storage basket to catch all the crumbs, makes it easier to keep the shelf clean. My homemade antibacterial wipes are great to have on hand for quick clean ups.
NEW HABIT – Clear the kitchen bench
To help you stay in control of you home I will share a new habit for you each day to add into your daily routine.
Clear your benches and clean the dishes before relaxing for the evening.
These are the steps I take each evening when cleaning the kitchen:
- Clear dining table
- Pack dishwasher
- Wash all pots and pans, cutting boards and any other items that don’t go in the dishwasher
- Clear away clutter on the kitchen bench
- Wipe over the bench, picking up all crumbs and cleaning up spills
- Empty sink, wipe over sink
- Turn on dishwasher
- Leave clean dishes to drip dry and put away in the morning
By following these steps above not only helps me to relax in the evening, but I also wake in a better mood with a clean and tidy kitchen.

5 MINUTES ONLY – Tidy a bookshelf
These 5 minute only tasks are little snippet tasks that you can do while on the phone or have a few spare minutes while waiting for the pot to boil on the stove. If you can’t complete them that’s fine, at the end of the challenge I will provide you with a full list of al the 5 minute tasks, so you can work through them all at your own pace.

Mostly done 🙂
Wow your Kitchen looks like a display home..
It has just wonderful light coming through the windows I think this is what helps make it feel so open and fresh 🙂
Finally completed the first day and it feels great to know my kitchen is really clean.
How did you feel Tiffany waking up to a clean kitchen?
I’m very very behind atm. No excuse other than some hectic space organisation going on at home. Will i still be able to access these for a while after challenge officially over?
yes you can access the full website now always, you have lifetime access to the whole site so you can print and visit any page whenever you need.
Ok, running very behind but have just done day one and feeling very happy with ones self! The sick child that I had home today, and that gave me a day off work, was even excited to help in a small but worthwhile way. Ahh…feeling like I achieved something and can now sit down with a clean kitchen!
Your not running behind at all Tiffany, take the challenge day by day to suit you. I love that you feel like you have accomplished something, be proud of what you have done!!
Sorry Kat – I’m a bit behind with the kitchen cleaning. I remember reading somewhere that you pop your dishwashing sponges in the dishwasher to clean. Is this something you would do every evening? Also my cloths go smelly very quickly ie, everyday so I was wondering what sort of sponge/cloth you use.
I use a thin sponge and a non scratch scourer and wash them twice a week by popping them in a cycle of the dishwasher.
Love my kitchen!!! And the sock idea??!! It works a treat. First time in years my husband has noticed housework done lol (and not by the fairies!). He said it’s the cleanest he’s ever seen it. Hmmm… should I be proud or ashamed lol…. On to the next task…. love your work Kat!
YOU SHOULD BE PROUD NESS!! Not proud because your husband can notice a difference, but proud that you have managed to achieve something you have wanted to change in your home, super super work Ness 🙂
Finished the kitchen and laundry today. Leaving bedroom till tomorrow when I have more time. Hubby asked if we were expecting visitors today!! Lol
LOL, he’s so funny….. hmm. Hope you enjoy the results Tracy.
While cleaning I’ve discovered my daughter’s toe nail polish has scrapped onto the wall under breakfast bar? They are a matt finish laminate, scrubbing didn’t remove, any suggestions, bit worried nail polish remover will strip top coating, also the same thing on the drawers on bathroom vanity, which is a gloss finish. So glad she likes black!? Any suggestions would be great. Loving the challenge!
ooh no Katrina, I’ve not had to deal with this before so I did some research, it’s suggested to scrape off as much as you can and use rubbing alcohol, like Isocol. Or I also did read to spray on hairspray to the area, wipe, spray again and wipe. I do agree you should be hesitant with nail polish remover. Also try using the gumption, it’s brilliant with everything thing else, hopefully it may help with this.
Thank you, will have a go. Keep on being awesome!
Thanks Kat, gumption worked a treat.
My kitchen looks amazing, I love how everything clean and in order. My hubby even made sure he wiped up any spills as he was cooking the dinner. Worked on Monday so did Kitchen and most of bedroom today instead. Looking forward to each new day ?
this is so wonderful to hear Sharon, I’m sure you would have enjoyed waking up in your new room!
Well I spent all day cleaning the top cupboards (outside only) and the rest of the kitchen isn’t finished. My bedroom (todays task) is just as enormous a job, so will probably finish the kitchen today and start the bedroom tomorrow. After falling off the ladder yesterday morning, things slowed down.
ooh no Sarah, did you hurt yourself, are you OK?
Hi Sarah, I hope you’re ok.
I have done this challenge before and doing it again now.
I discovered that if I hadn’t finished an area I was better off leaving it and moving to the next area along with Kat.
When I tried to finish an area before moving on to the next one it all started to build up and I ended up feeling like I was trying to play catchup and it got overwhelming.
Instead what worked for me was to jot down on paper a list of the jobs that I didn’t get finished and leave that for a day when I had a lighter load or the weekend. That way I could keep up with Kat and not get snowed under.
I keep going into my kitchen to admire it now! I haven’t done all of the cleaning yet although I made a start. I have prepared that this will probably take me longer than the 20 days but I’m going to do what I can each day as it doesn’t matter if it takes a bit longer. The decluttering of the kitchen bench has made the biggest difference – it looks so clean & lovely! Bring on Day 2!
Great work Jacquie, what did you manage to declutter out of your kitchen?
I got rid of all the piles of paper, plus all the bottles for the Soda stream, and the kids’ water bottles. As well as a couple of canisters that were never used. Plus since Monday, I’ve now been emptying the dishwasher in the morning when I’m waiting for my toast to pop up, and then washing the breakfast dishes before we go to school & work. That’s made it so nice to come home to a clean kitchen at the end of the day and much easier to then clean up after dinner. (I used to get the kids to empty it after dinner, before it could then be reloaded and I didn’t always get the breakfast dishes done in the morning.) So little changes have made a big difference 🙂
that’s so great to hear Jacquie and that you have managed to declutter to, your on a roll today!
