CLEAN – Kitchen
Our kitchen is the central place of our home. Visible by everybody that visits and we can see it while we eat dinner and sitting in the lounge room. For this reason I like it to be tidy through the day and at the end of the night, to make it easier to relax. Plus having a tidy kitchen makes cooking and baking much more enjoyable.
Cleaning task
I don’t want you to clean the cornices, floor, stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer or pantry today, we will get to them soon, instead today’s task is a good kitchen clean:
[wlchecklist name=’Day1CleanKitchen’]
Tip: Cleaning stainless steel appliances: spray appliance with vinegar and wipe over with a soft cloth. To remove fingerprints and give it a shine use some olive or baby oil on a cloth along the direction of the stainless steel grain.

Here are a few posts I have shared previously about the kitchen:
DECLUTTER – Kitchen Bench
Remove everything from the kitchen bench that does not need to be there:
- Paper clutter – consider making a specific home for all your papers
- Rubbish – should be thrown in the bin straight away
- Appliances
- One too many canisters
[wlchecklist name=’Day1Declutterkitchenbench’]
My kitchen is very open plan, all visitors to the house see it. I don’t keep too much on my bench except for the appliances that I use nearly every day such as the kettle and Thermomix.

I got these canisters from the Reject Shop, whilst they are the perfect colour for my kitchen, they aren’t completely airtight.
ORGANISE – Under the kitchen sink
You want to make this cupboard organised enough that everything has a place, to avoid it from becoming a mess and you only have supplies in there that you use, to avoid it becoming too cluttered.
- Remove everything from the cupboard and reassess what you have
- Throw away anything you no longer need
- Organise your products appropriately amongst the kitchen and laundry
[wlchecklist name=’Day1Organiseunderthekitchensink’]
Key for me to keeping this cupboard tidy is exactly what I outlined above. Only keeping the cleaning products I use for the kitchen under the sink and giving everything a place.
These drawers are from Bunnings. In the top drawer, I keep my tea towels. Previously I stored them on the other side of the kitchen. I’ve moved my stash to directly under the sink so we don’t drip water onto the floor. In the lower drawers, I have dishwasher tablets and spare sponges.
This tension rod holds my cleaners helping to keep the cupboard clutter free. I got this rod a few years ago from Daiso. Tension rods are extremely hard to find. Bunnings don’t sell them. Spotlight do, however their smallest is 80cm.
I placed 3M hooks on the cupboard door to hold our gloves. I have 2 pairs one for my small hands and one for my hubby (our water is sooo hot here, which is good and bad, we need gloves so we don’t burn our fingers).
I have recently changed from my glass jar of reusable wipes to this plastic tub, only because I wanted more wipes on hand as I found I was using up the 6 wipes that would fit in the jar far too quickly.
- Microfibre clothes were $10 for a pack of 20 from Bunnings
- Container for wipes, Decor from Spotlight $14.99
- Stackable Drawers $19.98 each from Bunnings
- Tension rod from Daiso
- Sink Tidy Caddy $19.99 Spotlight
- Long white Slide n Stack plastic basket $16.95 from Howards Storage World
- Smaller white plastic basket from local dollar store
- 3M hooks, local supermarket or Bunnings
- Gold Bulldog clips from Kikki K, but can also be purchased from Officeworks
I also want to show you my old house’s under sink cupboard. I kept my bulky appliances on the lower shelf and kitchen cleaning products on the top shelf. To keep everything grouped together I used plastic baskets found cheap from the dollar stores or Big W.
I kept my toaster under the sink, purely as I had nowhere else to store it. I kept it in a plastic storage basket to catch all the crumbs, makes it easier to keep the shelf clean. My homemade antibacterial wipes are great to have on hand for quick clean ups.
NEW HABIT – Clear the kitchen bench
To help you stay in control of you home I will share a new habit for you each day to add into your daily routine.
Clear your benches and clean the dishes before relaxing for the evening.
These are the steps I take each evening when cleaning the kitchen:
- Clear dining table
- Pack dishwasher
- Wash all pots and pans, cutting boards and any other items that don’t go in the dishwasher
- Clear away clutter on the kitchen bench
- Wipe over the bench, picking up all crumbs and cleaning up spills
- Empty sink, wipe over sink
- Turn on dishwasher
- Leave clean dishes to drip dry and put away in the morning
By following these steps above not only helps me to relax in the evening, but I also wake in a better mood with a clean and tidy kitchen.

5 MINUTES ONLY – Tidy a bookshelf
These 5 minute only tasks are little snippet tasks that you can do while on the phone or have a few spare minutes while waiting for the pot to boil on the stove. If you can’t complete them that’s fine, at the end of the challenge I will provide you with a full list of al the 5 minute tasks, so you can work through them all at your own pace.

Print the daily sheet and checklists to keep for reference while you are completing the above tasks.
Throughout the eCourse, I will provide you with checklists for each room. It’s important to note I have provided a complete cleaning checklist so at the end of the eCourse you have it as a reference. However, please note as mentioned above there are some tasks on the list that you don’t need to complete today. ie. you do not need to clean the cornices, floor, stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer or pantry, they will be completed on another day within the eCourse.

Ah ha. In the UK so it’s still Sunday! Am mentally preparing myself for the tasks of Day 1. Fingers crossed!
Good luck ladies and gents!
X
You will be fine. Looking forward to seeing your photos.:)
Day 1 complete!! I’m giving myself double the time to complete the challenge, mainly because I have a 5 month old who keeps me on my toes!!! I’m also doing the tasks a little out of order in Week 1, as I’ve completed Day 5 too!!!
Perfectly ok, Jessica. The challenge is all about fitting in with everyone’s busy lifestyles and as you have lifetime access you can always come back to redo tasks.
Running behind with this task. Have to buy some organising tools. Will get to a major town one day and get it done.
OK, I am running very behind in the challenge – only just finished the day one tasks :[
Have spent the last two and a half days out of the house, so have not got anything much done.
But …. I will get it all done, i might just have to run a week behind everyone else.
It is funny, as everyone who walks into my house says how tidy, clean and organised it is, but I don’t feel organised, hence what prompted me to join the challenge (that and the fact we are about to put the house on the market and i am finding it hard to concentrate on one task at a time. Also hope to be able to use it to get the new house organised from the start.)
So far all the daily habits have been ones I had in place already, so I am feeling rather good about that fact… :):)
Thanks so much 🙂
Don’t be too worreid about falling behind Kaycee, I’m here for support if you are a few tasks behind or not 🙂 Being that you are busy change the challenge up a little it doesn’t need to be 20 days, make it 40, every second day?? Make it to suit your schedule.
It’s taken me till day three (working late 🙂 ) but I’m done – what a feeling!
Well I’ve finally finished day 1! Its only taken me three days lol! As I am 21 weeks pregnant with a 3yr old at home full time I’m taking my time to complete the tasks fully but at a rate that I can manage. Im loving the opportunity to focus my baby brain and need to nest while I can! Thanks Kate for once again making cleaning and getting organised so easy! Love your approach and style!
Hi Kylie, taking 3 days to do 1 day is absolutely fine while pregnant, maybe take it easy and not do the bigger tasks, like cleaning light fittings and dusting high up. So pleased it’s helping you through this stage. Kat. xx
Love your remedy for de scaling the kettle Kat – mine seriously looks like new now:) thanks!
You are very welcome Lisa, they get quite grotty without us realising.
Just crossed off all the Day 1 list, including a kettle descale. Feels good to have completed one in whole, albeit a day after! Trying to power through the balance of Day 2’s list – just gotta do my top drawer, but I know there’s lots of memorabilia that I may take a while sorting/reminiscing over!
I have a bedroom admission to make, Kat. I have our baby change table in my bedroom, still fully laden with cot linen, muslin wraps, and the odd leftover nappy and sudocream tube. The unit itself is in very good condition, and would be very quick to sell. My “baby” will turn FOUR in August!!! She is our youngest, and I think if I’m honest, I’m trying to hold onto it because I know she’s my last and I don’t want her to grow up. I fear I’m grieving the fact that this is the end of this era in our lives, and so I’m hoarding it all with some kind of disillusioned belief or something. Maybe I should just get a garbag and pile all the linens in, take them to the op shop, and just simply throw away any other paraphernalia on it, like ripping off a bandaid – just thinking out loud
Take your time going through the memorabilia and put the things you treasure most away in a safe place. I keep those extra special in the bottom drawer of my bedside table.
LOL thank you for sharing your bedroom admission with me…. I do feel your pain, my youngest is now 10 she is my baby and forever will be I still try to cradle her in my arms, hard when she is nearly the same height as me LOL. There will be a point soon that you will be content with your baby being the age she is and happy that you no longer have to worry about nappies, nappy bags, etc and that you don’t need the change table any more. I found comfort in giving my stuff away to somebody that needed it. Or you could try selling it and put the money towards something for the family. However for the moment sit in your bedroom, look at the change table, close your eyes and imagine the space where the change table is and what you would put there. Be it a chest of drawers to store your clothes or an empty tidy space. If this is a happy thought you are ready to let it go. Hope this helps x
Thanks Kat, just looked back on all the days to make up a running list of the bits I have missed so far, and saw this response. I’m just about to head to bed, so will sit and close my eyes as you suggested and see what happens! (I may fall asleep – LOL!) Thanks again, x
Wow can’t believe my kitchen. My walls are clean and my sink and appliances are shining. This day has already changed the way I look at my house. I’m looking forward to waking up to this beautiful kitchen and getting stuck into day two.
You will love waking up to a beatuifully clean bedroom for Day 2, love that it has made a difference for you Samantha 🙂
I ran out of time to clean under the sink, and I forgot to do the 5 min task 🙁 I will do them tonight (after work).
Hubby was happy though, this morning, when he got up and saw a clean and clutter-free kitchen bench. So was I 🙂
All is good Juanita, you can do the 5 min task when your on the phone next 🙂
