Clean – Wardrobe
Today we are sorting through the wardrobe, giving it a good clean, declutter and if you haven’t done so it may also be a good time to put away your out of season clothes. I keep all my winter clothes in storage tubs at the top of the wardrobe as we don’t need jeans, jumpers or trackpants through the hot summer months. Now everybody has different types of wardrobe, such as cupboards or walk ins so please adapt this cleaning task to suit yours.
Below is the general cleaning checklist:

Declutter – Your clothes
When you look into your wardrobe can you easily find a piece of clothing or is it jam packed?
- Remove any items that need repairing, if you have time place them in a mending pile, if you don’t have time then consider if it’s worth getting it repaired professionally or give to charity for somebody that may have time
- Have you worn it in the past 12-18 months? No, then consider donating it to charity
- Does it still fit? Too big, great work! Donate it to charity you don’t need them anymore! Too small, if you are trying hard to return back to that size then place these items (not all as you need incentive) in a storage container in the top of your cupboard to make enough room for the clothes that fit you now.
- Purge if you don’t like how it looks or makes you feel.
A fun way I determine if I have not worn anything for a period of time is turn the coathangers, find more details here

Organise – Wardrobe
Now that you have cleaned and decluttered your wardrobe take some time to organise it. Straighten up the piles of folded clothes, sort your clothes into like items such as dresses, tops, good pants, casual pants etc this will make it easier to find things.
This is my hubby’s side

To keep the shelves organised I created labels to make sure all clothes were put back where they belong. These clothes labels are available in my shop as an instant download, you get pink and blue in the one pack, only $2.95.

I fold all my pants and gym clothes and hang all my singlets, shirts and dresses. I keep spare toothbrushes, cotton buds, ladies products, etc in the 3 baskets.

These are the plastic tubs that I keep all our season clothes in… as well as all things christmas.

I also keep my jewellery in the wardrobe, read here how I organise my jewellery

New Habit – One in one out
If you find it hard to part with your clothing consider the one in one out rule we discussed a few days ago, this is also relevant to clothes.

Great to have the wardrobe organised. Dropped off clothes to charity this morning. Realizing that doing things straight away saves so much time and baggage in the long run.
I love that you have dropped the clothes off to charity already that you aren’t creating any more clutter at home for yourself 🙂
Oh yeah… that REALLY needed doing lol D) 1 x large bag of clothes, shoes and sewing machine (yes, sewing machine!) off to the op-shop tomorrow. Kat, I love your idea of putting out of season clothes in a box! WOO-HOO 🙂 🙂
saves so much space in the wardrobe 🙂
I clean out my wardrobe fairly regularly but still managed to get a bag full of things not needed. Loving the challenge but running a little behind. Would love to see the schedule for when your kids were young.
Hi Kate, It is amazing i am the same. No matter how often i clean it out i still find things to donate the next time round (Maybe i buy too many clothes LOL oops) Here is a post on how i organise the kids wardrobes: https://theorganisedhousewife.com.au/organising/organising-with-masters-organised-kids-wardrobes/
Hi loving the challenge . Just thought I would ask does anyone have any tips for cleaning really high ceilings and walls , Found taking a step ladder around the room takes forever. Any tips!
Tracy, i have high raked ceilings too. I usually get hubby on to that job LOL no only because i don’t like heights.:) We use a ladder and clean broom. It is a slow job but eventually gets done.:)
I’ve been loving this challenge. (Although I have missed a few jobs that I will have to do after it finishes)
I was just wondering though – at the end of the challenge are you going to (or could you) share with us your regular cleaning schedule (e.g. Monday’s you vaccuum, 1st of the month you wipe down walls, etc.). This way we could see how you keep organised and on top of things on a regular basis.
Thanks.
On the last day I do share a cleaning schedule which will help you to keep ontop of those every day jobs, but I think if I share my scheudle it would be a great idea, it has changed over the years from having babies, toddlers, school kids and now being a WAHM. I’ll try and make it into a blog post at some stage 🙂

I need a bigger wardrobe!!! x
Oh Sarah don’t we all!.:) LOL I have often thought the exact same thing.:)
I do this during the year too and it makes culling easier 🙂
Yes it certainly does help! I do the exact same thing Nicole.:) Feels good to have a good clean out.
Hello, as a Stylist I also recommend that if you are contemplating on making a purchase, have a think of the items you already have in your closet. If you cannot wear the item at least twice with what you already own – Do not buy! We accumulate so much and oftern get sucked in to items on sale or ones we never wear!
Great point Ella!.:)
I got a fabulous suggestion from a stylist a few years ago about dealing with clutter in the wardrobe. Re-hang everything the wrong way and then put it the right way around the next time you put it away (after wearing). Then at the end of a month, see how many things are still the wrong way around and re-assess if you still need/want/like it. It was a great tip to see how functional your wardrobe is.
I also like that tip too Felicity! Thanks for sharing.:)
