Clean – The cornices
Despite getting my house regularly pest controlled I still get the odd little bugs nestled into my cornices.
Cleaning task
Clean away any dust or bugs hanging from your cornices or ceilings. There are a few different ways you can clean them:
- With a cobweb broom
- A stocking over the end of a normal broom, will make it easier to clean the broom
- Use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner
- If you don’t have a brush attachment secure a sock or rag to the end of your vacuum nozzle with a rubber band
Our house gets quite a few little bugs. I have found this method has been effective to keep them away:
- Wrap a rag/cloth around the head of a cobweb brush or broom
- Add a couple of drops of lemon essential oil onto the rag/cloth.
- Use the broom head to clean away the cobwebs, wiping over the cornices to leave behind the lemon oil to deter them from returning.
Lemon Essential Oil available in my shop here.
This is a great task for the kids to do!

Declutter – Kids artwork
This would have to be one of the hardest decluttering tasks, purging kids artwork. I get little scraps of paper with notes, beautiful drawings, huge pieces of butchers paper with scribbles all over, and cardboard creations. Unfortunately, we can’t keep them all.
When the kids give me their artwork I’ll display it for awhile on the fridge. I then take it off the fridge and decide to keep it or throw it. It’s hard letting go of their creations but honestly some are better than others and if it’s not truly special I put it in the recycle bin when they aren’t looking. The ones to keep go into a box I have dedicated for each of the kids artwork (I got these from kikki.k a few years ago). Which I go through when I have time and use with some of the ideas mentioned below.

Create a wall gallery, find more details see more details here.
Scan into a digital photo frame, see more details here
Create a special place to hang their creations, see more details here
More ideas:
- Use as wrapping paper
- Post to grandparents, aunts or uncles
- Laminate and use as a placemat
- Scan and make as wallpaper on your computer

cornices, they’re so odd and so regularly overlooked but I feel great about them now and they really didn’t take very long. We get a little (and I mean tiny) moth in our house, would they be laying their cocoon on the cornices? I’m quite worried about them and I get rid of them whenever I can in case they eat paper or cloth
yes sometimes their little cocoon can stain the cornice too.
Thanks for the ideas on saving kids art work this has been my long time problem.
I sent a message to my 26 yo last week with a picture he draw in year 1. He keeps telling me to get rid of them but I find this just to hard.
Love that we can scan and keep a digital file of it all now.
Found the purging of artwork really hard. Have managed though to keep to one box for each of my budding artists.
Loving the wrapping paper idea.
Grandparents would really love to receive a gift wrapping in the kids creative artwork!!
I really miss the daily task sheets (as I was printing them out with the Daily Sheets) – we got them for the first week but the second seems missing and we need to do it online to tick off? Am I missing something? It is just really wonderful to print them out and work through them…can you direct me to them? Thanks so much and apologies if I am completely missing where they are…
Katie 🙂
Hi Katie, do you mean the cleaning checklist? I just checked, I do see that I don’t have one for Day 12 I will amend that soon for yoU 🙂
Phew! I have almost caught up – just have to go back and complete 1 Clean, 1 Organise and 1 x 5 Min Task (which I’ll probably do in Day 18). I’m buggered!!
I have seen your progress over the past few days Ness and I am very impressed, I hope you are loving the changes you have made and your family can appreciate your efforts. Sit down with a well deserved cuppa and take in your achievements, well done!!
Thank you 🙂 Yes, my family have noticed what I’ve been doing. I just love my clean house. Every time I open a cupboard, the fridge or walk into a room – I just smile 🙂
I take a photo of the art work I want to remember, and keep their memory folders from school, and that is it. If there is a particularly special piece I sometimes scrapbook the actual piece, but mostly just scrapbook the photo, generally one of the piece, and one of the ‘artist’ holding it. 🙂
I vac my cornices each week – and my bathroom exhaust fans each month, So I am able to tick today’s tasks off easily 🙂
Yay, more time to catch up on the other days! 🙂
Great tips, Kaycee! You are on to it! x
I haven’t got kids so 1 job less. However i have started reorganising my craft supplies and that is a huge job so I’m glad that i don’t have today’s job. I spray the corners of my cornices with surface spray as we have so many daddy long legs. Started the linen cupboard. Have more sheets etc than you as our weather means drying can be problematic as i refuse to put sheets etc in the dryer
Nice work, Lesley! I like that you are so organised and sound like you are keeping on top of everything.:)
Hi Lesley – we have heaps of daddy long legs too – they seem to appear in their hundreds overnight lol. Does the surface spray work? Thanks
Hi Kat, Great idea about digitally scanning the kids artwork. Mine have grown up, but I still have some things I have kept. I think I will follow your example and get some bits framed. I get our house sprayed yearly as well.
Susanne
.:)
Kat – you mention that you get your house regularly pest controlled.
Do you mind if I ask why?
I really don’t see the need for it unless you get an infestation of a serious pest and chemicals used do leave residues, which can affect the health of sensitive individuals. I think it sort of defeats the purpose of having a chemical-free home. Also, I am a retired entomologist, and I saw over the years many people who were the victims of shonky operators. Some examples are companies who claimed to be spraying annually against insects such as termites, when they were in fact spraying water – in the full knowledge that the houses in question were protected by organochlorines [no longer used thankfully].
Chris, I personally like to get it done every 12 months as it does prevent spiders and ants. As we do get the occasional Red back if it is not sprayed. In saying that the people we use, use a low chemical pesticide which is not harmful to children or animals.
Too funny – looked at the photos and thought – Ha! Those cornices look like mine! Then realised it was dirt on my PC screen…. 😛
bahaha too funny!
