Clean – Fridge
I give my fridge a complete clean every 3 months, usually the day before I do my weekly grocery shop. In between this time a wipe over the shelves regularly with a cloth picking up any spills.

Cleaning task
Today’s cleaning task is to do the following in the fridge:
[wlchecklist name=’CleanDay7′]
I use my homemade fridge cleaner, with a microfibre cloth, as a scourer will scratch the fridge surfaces.

Here is a post I shared when I first started blogging, step by step guide to organising the fridge (I don’t put vegetables in our vegetable crisper, instead I use it differently).

And if you want to go that extra step read here How I Organise inside my Fridge.

Declutter – Cookbooks
I love recipe books, I have a quite a collection which includes many from my mum and grandmothers. I love the old fashioned recipes. However there are only so many cookbooks one needs. I am running out of storage space so I need to declutter my collection. There are a few cookbooks that I only use one or two recipes from, so I photocopy these pages and place them in my recipe binder and will then donate these cookbooks.
I have two recipe organisers, one for baking and one for cooking (dinners, slower cooker recipes etc). Having all my favourite recipes in one place has been fantastic.

Organise – Meal Planning
If you have been a follower of my blog for awhile you will know that I am a huge advocate for meal planning. I share my families weekly meal plans each Monday on the blog, pop on over to find some inspiration for your family meals.
There are so many benefits of meal planning, in brief it will save you time and money, eliminate waste, create healthy meals and so much more, you can read more about why I love it here. I sit down with my Sunday morning coffee and create our meal plan, give the fridge a clean out and then go grocery shopping throughout the day.
How to use a meal planner
- Prepare your meal planner:
- Laminate & use a whiteboard marker so you can re-use each week; or
- Frame and write on the glass with a whiteboard marker; or
- Create copies and file in a binder to repeat plans each month or so
- Create a list of all your families favourite meals. This will be an easy reference when you can’t think of something to cook.
- Nearly every family has after school activities during the week. Organise your menu around these activities knowing you can start dinner throughout the day to have it ready in time when you get home (or use your slow cooker, I love my slow cooker), or perhaps an easy meal is required on these nights.
- Glance through your fridge and pantry, check if there is any food that may need to be used soon?
- Have a look through the grocery junk mail and plan your meals around the meats and vegetables that are on special, this will help reduce your grocery bill.
- Perhaps you may cook up a double batch and you have left overs for the next day, don’t forget to include this in your planner.
- Now complete the planner with meals you would like to cook. Don’t forget you can get some great meal ideas here from my blog.
- Next, write your grocery list then your ready to hit the grocery store!
- Place your meal planner somewhere (on fridge or in frame on kitchen bench) for easy access and family to see.

The meal planner is available in my shop in a variety of colours.

I have finnally managed to clean the fridge and freezers. I’m keeping at it but it takes me more then one day to do the set tasks.
Perfectly ok Dominique! You are doing a wonderful job, well done for completing each task.
Yay! Got it done! Am so behind but still working part time, two kids, 22 weeks pregnant LOL this will happen in the end!
You are doing an amazing job Sally! You will love the great sense of accomplishment at the end.:)
Have looked at my fridge and have ordered the containers from Howard’s Storage. I really liked your setup Kat. Looks so much easier to use, and less thrown away. I have already started meal planning and that has saved on the budget, which is great! Also we have much more variety now in meals.
Susanne 🙂
WOW Susanne you are on to it!! Great job.:) The containers from Howards are fantastic, you will love them.:)
Love the idea of the frame for the meal planner, this might sound like a dumb question but what do you use to clean off the whiteboard marker to re-use for the next week? Thank you
Hi Natalie, I just use a damp cloth and dry with a paper towel or a clean dry cloth.
Hi Kat,
Loving the challenge. Thanks. I have sent you an email and not sure how to get in touch with you but will just pop my questions here agin if that’s ok.
1. Carrot stick! How long do they stay fresh in your groovy containers? (I cut up my vegies too but find carrot sticks go gross. Going to buy yhe ones you suggest if they will be good for a week)
2.Trying to organise my lists….so i can match, could you please tell me the 2 fonts are that are used in the print outs please ? I think the main one is Century Gothic but not sure about handwritten type of one? Please tell me so i can sleep at night!?
3. Finally, if you would be willing to share, i was wondering what the app is you use for your pictures and also the fonts on your FB page (the pic from Sunday with the font is awesome!) This would really help my organising and time management as i have started a healthy slow cooker group and would love it to look professional but don’t really have expertise in this area.
Sorry this is a little off topic!
Hi Jo, The app i used it Sunday’s post was from The Little Moments app. It’s a really great app with lots of cool fonts.
With the carrot sticks i usually keep them in the fridge for 2-3 days, after that they tend to go a little dry.
Oh thanks so much for the reply. it must be hard to keep up! Also, what is the handwritten type font you use for the task sheets please?
Just emailed you Jo 🙂
What kind of containers are those? The ones with the green lids… Thank you!
Hi Tricia, The containers are stackable Vac seal Containers from Howards Storage World.
Fridge is clean 🙂 I clean it out and give it a wipe down every Tuesday before Rubbish Day, and again before I go shopping on Sundays. (wanting to change shopping day). Today I gave it a good clean by following the checklist 🙂
Don’t really have that many cookbooks…so that was pretty easy plus we had a massive cull a couple of months ago!
Meal Planning – I LOVE THIS!! I have been trialling it on and off for a month! I really notice when I don’t have the meal plan sorted for the week! I love knowing what we are having for dinner, it makes the evenings run a lot smoother! Me and my partner take turns at cooking dinner…if its his turn to cook – i will do some of the prep to help him out (e.g. peel potatoes/turn oven on before he gets home etc)- as he doesn’t get home till 5:30pm. It works well 🙂 All about team work!
I also love the fact that grocery shopping is so much more easier when I know exactly what i need to get (especially for dinner)!
So impressed Charlene! You are on to it!.:) Well done.
All done for today. Yay!!! The fridge was surprisingly ok, I have done my cookbook shelf and I do menu plans anyway. My change is I went to the shop and got a frame so I can pop in a menu planner and then write on the glass. I’m forever taking the menu plan with the shopping list and then it ends up in the bin. Whoops!
Love the changes you are making Felicity! Great job in getting your fridge cleaned and organised.
Awesome! Already cleaned my fridge and I have already de cluttered cook books and use a meal planner! Day off for me… 😉
Wow fantastic Katherine! Really impressed.:)
I cleaned my fridge out at the weekend – hurrah! A chance to catchup 🙂
Fantastic Ellis! A nice catch up day for you.
