Day 6

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014September 26, 2017

Clean – Bathrooms

Aah the bathrooms, if neglected they become quite grotty.  The key to the bathroom is to routinely clean it which will then reduce the amount of scrubbing you will need to do.  I clean my bathrooms each week and wipe over them daily.

{The Organised Housewife} Kids Bathroom 3

Cleaning task

Today’s cleaning task is to do the following in the bathroom:

[wlchecklist name=’CleanDay6′]

Here are a few posts I have shared previously about organising the bathroom room:

  • How to clean a smelly toilet
  • Tips to speed clean the bathroom
  • Organising the kids bathroom
  • Colour code kids bath towels
  • 7 tips to organise a bathroom cupboard
  • How to clean a shower head
  • Deep clean bathroom tips for the forgotten areas
  • Organising the kids shower
  • More inspirational bathroom images
  • How a reader uses for vinegar in the home
  • 20 uses for vinegar around the home
  • Cleaning rubber bath toys
  • 13 different uses for shampoo
  • How to store and organise kids bath toys

When my kids were younger there were mornings that my kids would rush brushing their teeth, I check that they have brushed well and if not they have to brush again.  There was a stage that this was happening far too often so I created a chart (I love charts!!).  I use these charts to mark off if they have brushed their teeth well, at the end of the week it is acknowledged and rewarded in something as simple as picking what movie we watch or which board game to play.

Brushing teeth charts are available in my shop.  Click here to download

Declutter – Top of Bathroom Vanity

Note:  Please don’t declutter or organise your vanity cupboards, this is planned for another day.

Remove as much as you can from your bathroom vanity to make it look tidier and easier for you to clean.  I have always loved this caddy which we used as a toothbrush holder in the kids bathroom. It suctioned to the mirror to make it easier to wipe the bench.  This holder was purchased from woolworths (can usually be found hanging in random aisles).

I try to keep the top of my bathroom vanity clutter free. Keeping handwash, toothbrush/toothpaste, makeup remover wipes.

Organise – Shower caddy

In the pre task challenges I got you to create a shower caddy, today I wanted to share with you why the shower caddy is separate to the cleaning caddy.

{The Organised Housewife} Shower Caddy 3

I adore my hubby, he has always cleaned our shower as I am very sensitive to a lot of chemicals.  To make it easier for him I created the shower caddy which ideally needs to be a plastic peg basket as it goes in the shower with you and will get wet, the peg baskets have holes in the bottom for easy water drainage.  I purchased the basket above from Howards Storage World a few years ago (it’s no longer in stock), however you can purchase peg baskets from most department stores like Big W and Target or even the local discount stores.

Over the past few years I have learnt that it’s not necessary to use chemicals in the bathroom, that vinegar/bicarb solution with a toothbrush or strong grout brush works wonders. So I have been able to clean the shower more often.  I don’t necessarily clean it on a certain day, just a day each week that I know I have the time to spend a few extra minutes in there. It stays in the shower until the caddy and contents are dry and then I put it away in the evening.

[wlchecklist name=’OrganiseDay6′]

New Habit – Clear and wipe your bathroom vanity

While you are brushing your teeth, put away all items left on your vanity.  Once finished wipe your vanity bench and sink.  I keep an absorbent cloth in my vanity cupboard.  Wipe the vanity bench and sink each or every second day, rinse out the cloth and it dries overnight.

[wlchecklist name=’NewHabitDay6′]

5 Minutes Only – Wash the lines on your clothes line

Wash the lines on your clothes line, removing all the dust and dirt build up.

Over the preceding weekend I have been looking up the next weeks tasks and printing them off so I was ready when this day arrived. However that first moment I face the bathroom (and ensuite) ready to start and I am overwhelmed with the feeling of having drawn the short straw and feeling like I am obliged to be gracious about it so for me this is a difficult room.( love the break down of tasks by the way) Consequently this took a long time for me to get through but again once I began and started to see progress it became easier.

how did you go with completing the room Anna, was there an area you struggled with. I am really loving reading your process throughout each day 🙂

I have a dvd that I watch every so often and part of it says that when the woman moved into a house that felt abandoned – derelict – and unloved she needed to go round and pay attention to each area of the house and love it before she felt that it had become her home and I can relate to that. I’ve completed the bathrooms and each time I go in there I try to clean one thing so that it doesn’t become too big a task. The day I went out to the reject shop and bought trays for the items in the bathroom cabinets and gave myself permission to throw away things that hadn’t been used in a while I felt amazing

3 x bathrooms super clean!!! OMG biggest 2 day workout ever. Manage to break a toilet seat in the process, but upgraded to awesome seats that include a potty size seat in them for my 2 year old! (Thankyou Bunnings!) Also did a full wash/brush of all my interior blinds (x 8) and dried them in the sun, was such good day for drying them and now that is two of my most hated jobs out of the way. I did the blinds all at once, as I find it easier that way. Plastic horizontal venetians….. are awful to just dust or wipe over. SO YAY!!! Day 7 here I come!

Tiles are sparkling. I always wipe over but a good scrub has made such a difference.
Am presuming I am to clean ensuite as well?. Main bathroom and toilet done but will be unable to complete ensuite today due to other commitments, Will have to get to on the weekend.

Well that’s was disgusting!! Who knew grime could get in so many secret crevices of a shower door ? I’m dreaming of a nice simple wet room with only tiles to wipe over…feeling very glad it’s done though and I never want to leave it that long before a deep clean again!

Is anyone still up to Day 1???? I must admit I have only partially done tasks from day 1 – 5! Having 2 at home is proving harder than I thought! 🙂 Wishing everyone all the best for a smashing week 2!

Kat - The Organised Housewife May 17, 2016 - 8:52 am

Take your time through it Alexis, go at a pace that suits you and don’t stress too much if you can’t do all the tasks in one day, perhaps you need to make this a 40 or 60 day challenge, whatever suits your homelife 😉

Don’t worry Alexis I’m still on Day 1. I’m looking at this challenge as a way to add habits to my everyday life so I don’t get unorganised – hence it will take me longer than 20 days!!

Denise Myers May 18, 2016 - 8:34 am

I have only completed parts of the first week too. However, I have gone through the challenge before and I know there will be some days ahead where we can probably catch up. Even if we dont, it is all about changing daily habits and just touching on each part of our homes. There will be rooms that will still need work when I am finished with the challenge, but because of the challenge I will already have a good start! 🙂

Alexis, I am in the same boat… one at home and one at school and both hubby and I do shift work so is really hard to find time to coordinate everything!!! HOWEVER.. I am not giving up and hubby & I
will get this done!!

Feeling so accomplished after Day 6. but I am not relaxed if anything I am more paranoid about the kids and husband putting grubby fingerprints over my freshly polished furniture and walls and have become like the shoe nazi. I jump down heir throat before they even step foot in the door haha. But looks fantastic!!
