Day 6

by Kat - The Organised Housewife August 9, 2014September 26, 2017

Clean – Bathrooms

Aah the bathrooms, if neglected they become quite grotty.  The key to the bathroom is to routinely clean it which will then reduce the amount of scrubbing you will need to do.  I clean my bathrooms each week and wipe over them daily.

{The Organised Housewife} Kids Bathroom 3

Cleaning task

Today’s cleaning task is to do the following in the bathroom:

[wlchecklist name=’CleanDay6′]

Here are a few posts I have shared previously about organising the bathroom room:

  • How to clean a smelly toilet
  • Tips to speed clean the bathroom
  • Organising the kids bathroom
  • Colour code kids bath towels
  • 7 tips to organise a bathroom cupboard
  • How to clean a shower head
  • Deep clean bathroom tips for the forgotten areas
  • Organising the kids shower
  • More inspirational bathroom images
  • How a reader uses for vinegar in the home
  • 20 uses for vinegar around the home
  • Cleaning rubber bath toys
  • 13 different uses for shampoo
  • How to store and organise kids bath toys

When my kids were younger there were mornings that my kids would rush brushing their teeth, I check that they have brushed well and if not they have to brush again.  There was a stage that this was happening far too often so I created a chart (I love charts!!).  I use these charts to mark off if they have brushed their teeth well, at the end of the week it is acknowledged and rewarded in something as simple as picking what movie we watch or which board game to play.

Brushing teeth charts are available in my shop.  Click here to download

Declutter – Top of Bathroom Vanity

Note:  Please don’t declutter or organise your vanity cupboards, this is planned for another day.

Remove as much as you can from your bathroom vanity to make it look tidier and easier for you to clean.  I have always loved this caddy which we used as a toothbrush holder in the kids bathroom. It suctioned to the mirror to make it easier to wipe the bench.  This holder was purchased from woolworths (can usually be found hanging in random aisles).

{The Organised Housewife} Kids Toothbrush Holder

I try to keep the top of my bathroom vanity clutter free. Keeping handwash, toothbrush/toothpaste, makeup remover wipes.

Organise – Shower caddy

In the pre task challenges I got you to create a shower caddy, today I wanted to share with you why the shower caddy is separate to the cleaning caddy.

{The Organised Housewife} Shower Caddy 3

I adore my hubby, he has always cleaned our shower as I am very sensitive to a lot of chemicals.  To make it easier for him I created the shower caddy which ideally needs to be a plastic peg basket as it goes in the shower with you and will get wet, the peg baskets have holes in the bottom for easy water drainage.  I purchased the basket above from Howards Storage World a few years ago (it’s no longer in stock), however you can purchase peg baskets from most department stores like Big W and Target or even the local discount stores.

Over the past few years I have learnt that it’s not necessary to use chemicals in the bathroom, that vinegar/bicarb solution with a toothbrush or strong grout brush works wonders. So I have been able to clean the shower more often.  I don’t necessarily clean it on a certain day, just a day each week that I know I have the time to spend a few extra minutes in there. It stays in the shower until the caddy and contents are dry and then I put it away in the evening.

[wlchecklist name=’OrganiseDay6′]

New Habit – Clear and wipe your bathroom vanity

While you are brushing your teeth, put away all items left on your vanity.  Once finished wipe your vanity bench and sink.  I keep an absorbent cloth in my vanity cupboard.  Wipe the vanity bench and sink each or every second day, rinse out the cloth and it dries overnight.

[wlchecklist name=’NewHabitDay6′]

5 Minutes Only – Wash the lines on your clothes line

Wash the lines on your clothes line, removing all the dust and dirt build up.

I find using the Shower Caddy excellent. Also I now have anti bacterial wipes ready to go and a quick wipe down and the job is done. Make life so much easier. My bathroom is fairly well organised. I recently bought a hair dyer holder from Howard Solutions. My hairdryer now hangs neatly in the corner next to my vanity. No more coiled up cords.

Susanne 🙂

Thank you for the info about cleaning the toliet! I always wondered why the toilet in my classroom smelt of the ‘boy’ smell. It certainly not a job I want to add to my teaching duties though!

Bathroom is DONE – It looks so clean and shiny. It’s amazing how much of a difference clean windows can make to a room! Just need to do the toilet (it is separate from bathroom) – I will have a look at your tips before I start! Off to Bunnings to get a few things (including a new plug for bathtub).

I have added “Tidy & Clean Bathroom” into my daughters evening routine. She does this after she brushes her teeth. I’ll give it a once over before I go to be too 🙂

Great idea Charlene adding it to your daughters routine…. I don’t know how my kids do it but there is aways toothpaste splatters over every part of the sink and mirror.

I had the same problem (well in the sink anyway) so now it’s her job to clean it! lol
Toilet is DONE (ewwwww gross – did the bicarb & lemon juice TICK) I still have a few stubborn stains around the rim edge of the toilet…what do you suggest?

Reply
Kate - Kat's Assistant October 13, 2014 - 3:53 pm

Charlene, I would suggest using Gumption with a strong brush or another alternative is to let the bicarb and lemon juice sit for a while longer and make it into more a paste.

I think the bathroom is going to take me a couple of days. Too much to do for me to do it all in one day. Almost done everything else in the challenge from day 1 to 5.

Don’t forget Candice to leave the vanity cupboards for another day, cause they are a huge task in themselves.

HI there, does this include the ensuite or is that another day?

Reply
Kat - The Organised Housewife October 13, 2014 - 1:08 pm

Ooh yes sorry Tesha, all bathrooms today.

I had spare time Saturday morning and tackled my bathroom, I have found using a steamer very good to clean grout, I use a H20 mop, that breaks down to a hand held device. I try and do this once a month, sometimes it stretches out. I am so glad you had the post on cleaning the toilet, with pictures. A few years back had the same issue with our toilet and thought I would tackle the SEAT, quite an experience when you get the lid off! Nearly scars you!

Kat - The Organised Housewife October 13, 2014 - 1:12 pm

Ooh yes that would be great to use! Ooh yes taking the lid of is so necessary, so much yuck hiding under it.

Hi! Are we meant to be doing under the vanity and cleaning out the cupboards? Or can I put that off for another few days! 🙂

Reply
Kate - Kat's Assistant October 13, 2014 - 10:43 am

Hi Renee, No don’t do it today. It’s coming up in the challenge!.:)

Reply
Felicity October 13, 2014 - 10:49 am

Whoops…did that, although they aren’t big and don’t contain linen, so wasn’t a big deal.

Jane October 13, 2014 - 10:31 am

Hi Kat! Love the challenge, I’m just so behind in it. When you say ‘absorbent cloth’ what do you use?

Reply
Kate - Kat's Assistant October 13, 2014 - 10:46 am

Hi Jane, Glad you are enjoying the challenge! I use a Chux or Absorbent Cloth from Woolworths.

That clear shower caddy is awesome!! If you don’t mind me asking, where did you get it from? 🙂

Reply
Kat - The Organised Housewife October 13, 2014 - 10:08 am

Hi Gianina, I purchased it from Howards Storage World a few years ago, sadly they no longer sell it.

Reply
Gianina Takacs October 13, 2014 - 10:48 am

I mean the over-the-door clear organiser thing, not the product caddy. Is that what you were referring to?

Reply
Kat - The Organised Housewife October 13, 2014 - 1:11 pm

Ooh so sorry Gianina, that is from LifeSpace, you can find all the details here: http://theorganisedhousewife.com.au/organising/bathroom/organising-the-kids-shower/
